We’re excited to announce the details of our newest promotion, SPG® Better by the Night. Yes, the name might sound familiar but we think it’s bigger and better than our promotion earlier this year by the same name. Here are the details:
    - Earn double Starpoints on stays of 1 or 2 nights.
    - Earn triple Starpoints on stays of 3 nights or more.
    - Plus, earn 250 additional bonus Starpoints for stays booked at spg.com, or 500 additional bonus Starpoints for stays booked through the SPG mobile app for iPhone®.

All earnings are from October 1 through December 20, 2012. Stay earnings are at over 1,000 participating hotels and resorts worldwide (a list of non-participating properties can be found on our Better by the Night page). The booking bonuses are eligible for all Starwood hotels and resorts that participate in the SPG program, regardless of whether or not the hotel is participating in this promotion.

Earnings are unlimited, and the registration window will begin mid-September. In the meantime you can visit spg.com/betterbythenight to learn more, and to sign up for a text reminder message alerting you when registration begins (available for U.S. and U.K. members).

As always, would love any feedback you have about the promotion.

    Best regards,

Having missed out on the last promo entirely, with plans shifting and all, this is a plus!

    Thanks, William.

Keep in mind that Freedom has a $1500 cap and also includes hotels, airlines, Kohls (which gave 10x for a while last year), and Best Buy. If you can hit $1500 with the other categories, put SPG spend on the SPG Amex

Come on.. There are two St Regis and 6 Ws not participating. Except the St Regis Singapore, there's none of the properties that are excluded that doesn't have better options in the cities they're in. I find all of the properties you mention very underwhelming, but I do sometimes stay at the Parker Meridien. It's ok and they always opt out, so no surprise there. If you must stay at a W in NYC, you've got two more to choose from

I do dislike this exclusion strategy, though.

As for the promo, I'll take it, but not worth it to change my stay pattern IMHO

My point was that I would have to change my stays....not that anyone else has to. Since I have 5nights at the SR Singapore, I might change that to the Sheraton to maximize my points earnings. Same with the stays I have booked at Le Parker Meridien. I will likely switch to something else to earn more points. And the other one that really stinks, for me, is the Sheraton Hotel & Towers Hong Kong because it's the only affordable SPG option for ME in Hong Kong. W is out of my price range there.

IMO, it is worth it to me to change my stays to maximize my SPG points.

I see your point, but to say that 2 and 6 hotels from two brands is "a lot" is kind of a stretch ;)

But your example is a good one for SPG to take a look at. If I was at the St. Regis Singapore, I'd definitely move to the RC or the Grand Hyatt instead because of this. Not a good thing to exclude properties making people change where they stay to earn points. You are in risking that VGP moves from the St. Regis in Singapore to a competing chain outside of SPG and by doing so, the St. Regis is in fact loosing out on at least 2500 bucks for not awarding a handful of points.

IMHO, not a smart move by the property, not a smart move by SPG by letting them opt out

SPG won't lose VGP :) I'm over 100 nights this year and still counting. But I'll likely stay at the Sheraton instead in Singapore. Though it will be disappointing not to experience SR!

Is SPG expecting to put out an Android app soon? Considering it has more market share worldwide, I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet...

I have always been encouraged by the helpful Platinum Concierges to call them to book. Is SPG trying to cut them out of the herd by offering me 250 points to bypass them? Or to penalize the guest for using them? This seems perverse to me -- to offer a "special" benefit, and then smack me on the hand for reaching for it.

I'm glad that you find the Platinum Concierge department to be helpful.

Not at all. Please continue to use them if you wish. Or, if you'd rather have the 250 Starpoints, by all means, use the web.

It seems perverse to me that there is so much angst about 250 Starpoints, but I guess we are responsible for that. Try to look at it as a bonus to those who choose to accept the terms that surround it rather than a smackdown for those who choose another route. It is, after all, a choice that you can make.

I guess it's a good thing I picked up an old iphone 3GS to use as an ipod device (okay, really just so I could play pocket planes :D)

I'll have to remember to book all of my stays within the promo period using the app.

IIRC this is not the first time the StR Singapore has opted out of a SPG promo, but it's still a great property that treats Plats well. I would not be willing to stay at the Sheraton with its musty rooms......but there surely are other comparable hotels in Singapore, although I'm fond of Raffles (which one either loves or hates, but I love the iconic historic properties).

In a sense the promo is doing its job for me, in that I downloaded the SPG app onto my iPad the day the promo was announced. However, I don't think I can redo my current bookings at the same rate......and I can imagine first checking rates and availability on the website and then trying to book using the app for the extra points. The downside is that I won't be able to print the confirmation immediately in case something goes wrong.

I've always gotten a suite upgrade at the Sheraton and the suites are top quality suites with expensive furniture. I also like the club and the large pool area in the back. I have no problems choosing that property in the future.

It seems sort of strange to me that neither the Tremont Chicago nor the Manhattan at TS are participating since both are actually owned by Starwood.
