8 United SWU's Expiring Soon

Discussion in 'United Airlines | MileagePlus' started by gordonh, Sep 22, 2011.  |  Print Topic

  1. I have 8 SWU's expiring by the end of the year and was hoping to gift them to people who would benefit the most (elderly people flying internationally, for example). 2 questions: (1) is this in accordance with the rules (2) any suggestions as to how to do this?

Yes, you are free to do this. And I think that this thread is a great way to go about it.

my parents (in their 70's) are flying to London on CO in Coach in November for thanksgiving. I got work to pay for me, so i'm flying on Virgin in upper class. This would be an amazing gift if nobody else is a taker!

Are they on a W or higher fare? If not the SWUs won't work.

    Very generous of you! :)

Too bad one wasn't expiring in January, then I would ask/beg you to gift one to sponsor my BFF's flight from HKG-BOS (W fare ticket).

You could do that, CO does not charge for Up-Faring but I'd make sure the UA SWUs were valid first for this kind of transaction, secure the SWUs beforehand, Check for NC (Business Class Availability), then Up-Fare the reservation...

By the way Gordon, you da man!

On CO metal they'd be looking for R inventory, not NC.

And the "no fee to re-fare" policy officially only applies if the fare difference if you are buying a fare that confirms you into F, not just to change the co-pay eligibility. This is a gray area at best and I'd definitely say that some calls are in order to make sure it would work out. My guess is that it would not.

    Right, I was thinking UA=NC...CO=R

I did upfare from K to W without paying a change fee then applied a SWU to my friend's reservation though so I guess in this situation YMMV?

i'm alowly gold (considering doing a run for the 10k i need to get to 75k this year, switched to a traveling gig so next year will be easy...) and haven't ever used a SWU. are they confirmed at booking assuming R is available or do you get stuck on a waitlist?

They are confirmed if the inventory is available. They can be waitlisted if it is not.

It is possible R space will open later. I was waitlisted last week on a domestic flight that was R0 one day and R7 the next.

i'll keep checking then! Fun fact: CO is listing available fares when you click "Fare Class" on the "view current reservation" page. anyone think of any reason why this wouldn't be comprehensive/display R space?

I think it only shows the award buckets when you are making a new reservation, not when viewing an existing one.

Is it possible that you could contact organizations like Make a Wish to see if they can use some?

Thats what I did with my US Chairmans Certificates in 2007 when I couldn't make use of them...I called US to inform them of the "donation" and they gladly matched my donation to the Make a Wish foundation which was an nice gesture.

I am taking my elderly parents to Europe next week (October 20). They are 86 and 79 years old. I gave them business class tickets but I only purchased a coach ticket for myself. I was hoping to upgrade using my own SWU. I just became a 1K last week and I am concerned that I will receive my SWU by the time I leave on Thursday. (I specifically purchased an eligible fare so that I could use one.) I also gave my sister a business class seat as well. We are going to visit my niece who is studying abroad in Luxembourg. It would be wonderful if I could get upgraded as well, so that I can sit with my parents and my sister in business class. I only need one SWU. If you would like to "gift" me an SWU, I'd be happy to gift one back to you for any trip you may take in the next year before mine expires. They told me I should have my SWU's within a week or two. Therefore, mine should expire around October 31, 2012.

  23. Hi everyone, first posting and happen to be asking for something... Nice! Next many postings will be giving vs. taking for sure.
I am on UA0836 from PVG to ORD on 11/20 ("W" fare) and would be really grateful if anyone has a SWU that will go unused and would be willing to gift. I would of of course be more than happy to trade. Getting sleep and rushing home to my little ones = priceless. Thx so much

I understand you desire to get up front for that long of a flight. It's also sad it an old configuration 777 also (no lie flat seats in C). But, what's really a bummer is there is no NC availabilty currently, so a SWU won't help you right now.
Keep checking for NC > 0 and if there becomes space please post ASAP.
    Best of luck,
    John

  25. Thanks so much for responding AZjohn. Pr Exec and should make 1K for first time (probably down to the last day) and will have SWU next year for the first time. Will research NC (embarrassed to say
