I am flying PHX to SJU in October for an anniversary....I usually fly CO/DL....have not flown AA in a long time...

I have the option of flying 738F or MD80F/757F on the outbound....the return is 738F....

What are your thoughts on 738F versus MD80/757F.....
    Thanks in advance....

Why no love? Can anyone offer their opinion on the F experience in the AA 738 versus F in MD80/757?

This will be a special trip for us and we don't routinely fly AA......Thanks in advance!

Some of us are slow with responses, sorry to say. I have flown each of these quite a lot. With AA my order of preference is:
    B738
    then a long way down
    B757
    MD80

I don't care for the 757 F seat at all in the domestic configuration. I just can't get comfortable in that seat. The 737-800s have a new slider type seat that avoids someone reclining into your lap. I don't know if they're on all the 737-800s, though they have been on my last couple flights. I'm fine with the MD80 seat.

I prefer the MD80s. I have issues getting comfortable in the 757 and the 738 I just haven't gotten used to. I also find the cabin quieter on the MD80.

So we agree only that we dislike the B757.

Well, there's your problem right there. :D :D :D No such thing as a "special trip" in domestic first anywhere these days.

I personally don't think you'll see much difference no matter which plane you go with. A couple of minor points for the MD80s: They're very quiet in F, since the engines are in the tail instead of on the wings; and the EF side has a smidgen more legroom than the AB side.

Other than that, I'm sure you'll get the same tired food, mediocre service and old seats as in all of AA's domestic F fleet.

For upgrade purposes it is considered domestic.

I think the reason you haven't gotten much of a response is because people are pretty ambivalent about the planes... many/most people don't like the 757 domestic. Some people love the MD80, some love the 738. There's no consensus.

A non-sequitur... what's the etiquette when the question and reasonable responses are available on another website???

At this point, I think most people here are refugees from the "Other" site. :)

Thanks for all the info....I was leaning for an entire 738 trip but due to flight times it will be MD80/757 outbound via DFW and 738/738 return via MIA....so i will get a taste of all 3 aircraft in F.....

The MD-80 (just a newer version of the DC-9 family) has a narrower interior

than either the 73s or the 75s & although I had been a strong supporter of

all the Douglas (McDonnell-Douglas) aircraft I find the 73s very comfortable

& is my favorite of the non heavies & I avoid the 75s if I can

No, but any plane flying there is going to be in a domestic 2-class configuration. So it's a difference that makes no difference.

I don't think you'll notice huge differences. That said, I have a problem with the 737 - is it just me or is the seat cushion barely 'cushioned'? Wears on my tailbone and keister after awhile. I actually prefer the 757 myself, but like others said not a huge difference.

AA's 757 F? DO NOT WANT. Very un-ergonomic and backache inducing for me, and I am not a demanding customer (I fly a lot in AS F, which is widely panned as being awful, but I think the seat's fine.)

Like most here, I prefer the 737. I like the seats on the MD80 more than the 757, if we're talking about the old brown/beige wide 757 seats. On some 757's, they have the newer seats, just like on the 737s, so those get elevated to the nicest domestic F seats, in my opinion.

it seems that the recline is much better on the 737's. however, they don't seem as comfortable to me. my first preference in F is as follows
    757
    S80
    737
i probably would have been more comfortable on my red eye on a 737 if they would have supplied a pillow!
