A spate of flying in the last two months, after a two year drought, allowed me to go from no status, to silver and, now, I have enough miles and segments for Gold. However, when my Odyssey O' Conference Rooms ends tonight, I will be $6 short of the $5,000 minimum spend to qualify. Short of buying the cheapest ticket I can find and doing a "dollar run," is there any other way I can cross the magic threshold? I'd happily send UA a $6 check -- I'd even round it up to $10 :) -- but I don't think that would work.

I am unaware of anything short of a dollar run that can help you unless you can get a Chase United Credit Card and spend $25K before your next trip. Gold is the best discount card an economy traveler can have, especially if travelling internationally with significant checked luggage. It's possible that it could save you hundreds of dollars on your next trip or it could save you nothing. Personally, since I rarely check more than one bag I'd just go with silver outbound and return gold on my next trip.

Maybe buy up to full Y or a Business class seat or any fare that is more expensive on the flight tonite???

For only $6 I would be looking to find something a little more expensive.

Or does purchases of on board food count? Maybe buy a day pass to a UA club? does that count?

Call the TA that booked the flight tonite, and have them pay an additional $10 more to UA without explaining????

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm already in F PDX/SFO and SFO/LAX on either an A or Z fare (my TA booked it -- I just told her "QUP" which, at this point, is probably an obsolete term). I do have other travel coming up, but it would have been nice to hit Gold before it. Actually, this trip hasn't been too bad -- F on all legs and TSA Pre. The only pain was the rude LAX AirServ "employee" at the start of my trip two weeks ago who wouldn't direct me to the Pre line unless I put my bags in the sizer. I refused, went over to a UA gate agent who sympathized -- evidently AirServ at LAX has gotten quite full of itself recently -- and told me a way around her (which worked! :)).

Would be interesting to challenge the AirServ employee by asking under what authority s/he is blocking access to a federal security checkpoint.

They tried to stop me for having 3 bags last month (one was a CPAP). The agent was so rude, I didn't even give her the courtesy of a reply. Just kept walking. Frankly, I was surprised she didn't chase me, from stories I've read.

She didn't block me -- she just wouldn't tell me where the TSA Pre line was. However, I'll tell my TSO story in another thread. :)

$25k in spend on a United branded credit card gets you a pqd spend waiver (up to Platinum).

I'm sure there's some sort of play with $25k worth of Sound of Music DVDs that you can buy and shred, but I haven't figured it out yet.

Well, it turns out I'm $120 short -- my math was off. Looks like there's a dollar run SNA/SFO in my future.

Maybe I'm missing something (I usually am), but if you are already flying up front what difference does getting Gold make? (Except for the 50% rdm bonus miles).

    Gotcha, makes sense than. :)

I cast my vote for buying some E+ to help with the PQD's than.

FWIW, same day returns SNA-SFO are available in early June from $138 ai (only $108 would count as PQD though). An E+ purchase should easily get you to $120.

Thanks, alanro, I saw that. I'm planning on doing it, assuming my schedule allows. I also didn't realize that only $108 would count as PQD -- definitely need to buy E+.

Good time to point out to those in need that only the base airfare, fuel surcharges and E+ purchases count toward PQD. All those taxes go to the gubmit, so UA will not be giving us any credit for those.

I'm still confused about their decision not to count money spent purchasing PAMs toward PQDs. I have often said that the accelerator program is the greatest marketing play in aviation history, with the exception of the FF program itself. The only rationale I can imagine is that they are trying to significantly thin the number of top tier elites, as they can't meet the expectations of today's number. It would not surprise me if that were to change next year once they see how many (how few?) 1Ks there are still standing.
