Got an email offer for 50% off if you purchase over 40,000 miles; is that a good deal? About 2 cents each.....

It depends on what you want to do with these miles...

If you're going to take a trip to Europe in Business Class that costs $5,000 and you can acquire the miles much cheaper for the same flight then there's your opportunity cost. ;)

Being the cheep mileage hungry person I am. Unless it was for a "got to do it now" trip, I would put the $$ towards a revenue ticket.

Also depends upon one's future flying after March 1st, your status tier and the fares you generally pay. If you're likely to just be flying low-fare domestic runs, then your RDMs are going to plunge so stock up now at 2¢ a mile. If your company pays full fare or buys you premium class tickets, then it's not likely you'll need to top up your account now.

Not after March 1st. An $800 ticket would generate anything from 4400 to 8800 RDMs depending upon your status. So spending it now for 40K RDMs is a fairly good investment...and easier on the behind (albeit no PQMs towards next year's status).

1 March does not stay in my short term memory:oops:, I'm still working on the soon to be "old" rules.

Is it considered a United purchase if I use my Chase United card (2xmiles) or something else since it says "points.com" or whatever?

Points.com is never going to be considered airfare.
