I guess cow brain is a very popular item in some parts of the world, but to smuggle for $1500 profit?

I hope it was refrigerated property.

Can you get mad cow disease from eating cow brain of an infacted cow? I would guess yes, if the animal has it, because it's transmitted by stuff like nerves, spinal fluid, and bone marrow IIRC.

Lamb and sheep brains seem to be popular in Greek cuisine, also you see them in France.

I have tasted baby sheep brain many years ago and I think I liked it.

I had raw lamb brains once as an amuse bouche in a good restaurant in Belgium. It was something like a thin slice on Melba toast. It tasted better than it sounded.

Not to pick on the smugglers, but I might make a choice other than "large freezer boxes" if I were trying to avoid inspection.

Would you try to smuggle oversees just to earn $1500 with all associated risks?

There are certain research materials that, in the old days, were isolated from animal tissue rather than grown up in controlled cultures. Instead of buying a jar from Sigma, you'd have to go out to the slaughterhouse, buy 20 lbs of cow brain, and then bring it back and extract whatever protein you were looking for. With that marketing opportunity no longer available, apparently Egypt is the new target customer. :D

Given the issues in Sudan and the potential market in Egypt, I'd think $1500 seems like a decent risk. I doubt many make much. :(

We cannot comment on the decisions of others, who might see the potential of making the average annual income of a Sudanese resident with different cultural norms. In fact, the article expressly states the brains were burned only because the sanitation process could not be confirmed (and that this was the fourth time this week).

that would not amuse my bouche! ;)

Sudan's GNI is about $1200, so $1500 would be 40% of the annual income for each of these guys if they had succeeded.

For my thesis, I used to collect fresh cow brains to purify proteins I was studying. Ack! the smell was bad!

Then it might make sense, but what about transportation cost?

Heh, did that in grad school, I forgot what we were harvesting. Couldn't eat burgers and hotdogs for YEARS, after finding out what they were.
