I was just checking the account today to send my last couple thousand over to Continental before the dead line. But just today they posted 40,000 new miles. It says "PRG $500 spend / 40k MR pts " What is that for?

Now, I got this card last spring in the in the mix up with the 50K and two years free deal. They ended up giving me 10K and 75K more when i complained and asked for another offer.
I then transfered the miles out to BA and CO. And i have been using the card regularly.

What should I do here? It seems unwise to call and ask. If I transfer them to CO now, can they come after me later and want them back?

Spend them... or send them out somewhere else. Right now. :)

The same happened to me. With this in mind I might just keep the card for another year just to see if my annual fee will be waived.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. People who signed up for the Amex thru the Columbia Business School offer are getting the 40k points in addition to the regular bonus. Take the points and quietly walk away :)

They just found out that the 40,000 was a mistake and took them back. Or tried to. I now have a negative balance. I do not think I will be using that card anymore.

I think AmEx bills for the negative points eventually. There's no reason this wouldn't follow the logic of borrowing miles on AmEx MR. I had borrowed some points and had a negative balance when I closed my MR account and they immediately charged me for the value of the miles. If the account is still open you have a certain time to add the miles or they will charge.

I have their e mail saying they will not charge. But, I have not closed the account yet.

How much did they charge you?

I did not borrow or ask for these points. So, I see it as their mistake. Of course, they hold all the cards in this game.

Well, today I received a $175 credit. They haven't even charged my annual fee yet. I guess that if I close my card now I'll be up with $175 and 130k MR points. Ahh, I think I'll just keep this card another year and pay the fee with my new credit.

AMEX can afford to let everyone that mistakenly received too many points keep them. It is no ones fault but their own.

I just looked and yes, I have a $175 credit as well. And a negative 28,000 points.
What to do now? If I keep the card, they may take back the $175 sometime in the next year. .

This story just goes on and on for me. Since the above post on 1/28/12, I put this card in my safe. I stopped using it and was waiting for my second year fee to arrive. This week, I took it out to sign up for Small business Saturday. Just today, i noticed that they gave me back the 40,000 points that were deducted. The explaination was " customer good will". So, I am in the black again and may continue to use the card.
