Earlier today I emailed a friend who is top cheese at an FAA facility asking about shutdown impact. Everyone in his office has been laid off, except him, including all airline safety inspectors!

    One source. Another.

Another side effect- I'm a student pilot and while I can continue flying, I can't take the federal knowledge exam as the FAA isn't processing them. Without that exam results, I can't take the check ride. Basically, no new pilots will be certified and no more ratings requiring knowledge exams can be added until the shutdown ends.
