"Partial closure" is very different than "closure!"

Regarding the partial closures, maybe this is less a sign of the times, and more a statement on the poor planning strategies of the Spanish government. While airport development can often stimulate growth, in many cases, these facilities were grossly overbuilt.

I used to invest in airports when I ran an infrastructure fund (in a prior career); the formula is fairly simple. When governments get involved - funny business often ensues - and things get overbuilt.

Look at LHR, SYD, JFK or MEL. Each continue to experience solid passenger growth. (Downright solid growth when you look at the Australian properties.) Even ADL, which was overbuilt, is turning a profit.

Spain should look in the mirror a bit more closely.

Absolutely, is sad for the traveler but is a situation created by those clever  bureaucrats.

The sad par is how the ATC controllers there have exploited their position to be paid ridiculous amounts of money in their jobs. I'd bet that isn't helping on the operating costs of the airport facilities.
