As a typical long haul flier (Avg 3750 miles per segment so far this year) I just took my first short hop, YMM/YEG on a flex fare, and will get 250 miles in my AE account. This flight was on Dash 400 that was completely full with mostly work commuters.

How is this affecting others who do a lot of these short hauls? Seems to me it could cause several FF'ers to lose their ability to get to SE on miles.

I do a lot of trans-border hops YYZ to ORD, EWR, BOS, etc.

Most flights now are just less than 500 miles so I do notice a small difference in accumulation. I make my SE status on segments, so that hasn't changed.

Will somewhat negatively impact my total mileage accumulation but not by much... I'll have no problem reaching SE this year so most of my domestic flying will be on Tango fares - last year many would have been in Flex but with the cost of eUpgrades and lack of earning ability, I just don't see the value in paying for Flex. So I'll drop from 125 miles to 62 on short hops. No big deal.

Good point but remember the MM focus you might have.

    I'm already MM.

Will hit 2M in ~5 years and will likely hit 3M before I retire if AC/Altitude still exists even with my current blend of Tango, Flex, PE and P/Z..

Unfortunately after years of int'l travel, most of my travel has been transborder this year, and I'm feeling the pressure.

Even for Int'l, I live in the golden triangle, and used to always do a YOW-YUL/YYZ-YYZ/YUL-X (and same on return) for an easy 1K miles. Now, it's 500 miles. Not as much incentive for me to spend that much extra time for small 250 miles. And yes, I was probably one of the problem pax :)

Being very close to 3MM, not counting the almost 500K of Canadian miles plus pre 1988 AE miles, it is a long tough run, but its been mostly interesting and fun.

Similarly, I expect to be seeing rather less of YYC this year.

Being nowhere near 1MM my goals are more modest: maintain enough status for lounge access and the odd upgrade; fly up front as much as possible; and share my benefits as much as I can. But I agree it's mostly interesting and fun.

Off to BRS, DAR, KGL over the next several weeks. Who knows what's next?

No idea, to be honest. It's a conference and I haven't yet been informed where the accommodation will be. First time there for me.

I suspect those most affected by this change earn SE (or other elite tier) with segments not miles. This does seriously impact their RDMs. Not only does these poor sots pay more per mile for their flights, they get no chance at a free drink of booze since there's no J cabin to upgrade into on most of these regional routes.

At least I'm not the "poorest of sots".....the e75 & e90's on trans border have J!
