from the get go, this prediction seems wrong as it starts here and not on TOBB! :D http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-12-30/six-extremely-unlikely-predictions-for-2014

Cash pile of $7 Billion and they devalueted their currency, really?

The news of UA's imminent demise are greatly exaggerated.

    Just you watch...

And it's not even April Fool's Day! Considering UA was losing money in almost every quarter for years/decades before it went into Chapter 11 (and CO went through Chapter 11 twice itself) this is a most stupid "forecast".

The only way UA would go BK is if fuel prices spiked sharply. And I'm not sure that would even happen, given they likely have some sort of fuel hedging contract right now.

I could see a scenario where Smisek is asked to leave, but that's about the worst of it.

Would that mean that we would no longer be presented with the "Hi, I'm Jeff Smisek... " commercial, before the safety video? I'd vote for that!

Did you read the part of the article where the guy says there's almost no chance of those predictions happening??

    Yeah, extremely unlikely indeed.

Consolidation did what it was intended to do and each of the major networked carriers (UA,DL,AA, and WN) are more financially sound than they've ever been since de-reg. Even the industry laggards are going to make money in this environment, just not as much as their peers.

If you want to look for bk candidates, maybe look at the VXs of the world and other small players/new entrants. The big guys got what they have wanted for decades.

No way.. But I hope they invest more in their southern routes and get some bigger airplanes flying over there.. Without US to codeshare with UA I think will be bad for *A flyers to keep flying *A.

Without the $trillions in Federal Government subsidies, ALL airlines would be bankrupt by now. Look what happened to the Rail industry after the feds cut their subsidies over the last few decades. Without the subsidies your tickets would cost 5-10 times what they do today!!!! UA's rumors may be another request for more subsidies...........

I can, without any reservation, say that my experience with UA has been excellent. Without exception, excellent. Sure - there are weeks they p*ss me off... but overall, I haven't had any problems*. I routinely get to/from my destinations and the delays have been explainable. YMMV.

*except trying to get on the 787. That, appears to allude me no matter what I do.

I have been pretty content with their service lately, too. UAX is more likely to run late than mainline, but not often enough to mess me up.

My biggest complaint is how frequently I find myself flying on UAX. Particularly between IAH and DFW/DAL when WN and AA fly all 737s and MD80s.

Certainly understand that, and having to fly UAEx is a drag. But even watching AA and DL - that's the way things are going. I want them to get that under control - but overall, I can't complain.

Actually, their overall rank is 9th (according to the graphic -- see first column).

Sees a bit low to me, but then again so does AA's rank at 8th. But one presumes the metrics bear it out (i.e., that the ranking is objective based on data rather than subjective based on opinion).

The rankings are based on objective data. The problem is that it is not necessarily reasonable to say that an airline with 1.47 lost bags per 1000 enplanements is inherently worse than an airline with 1.51. Sure, the numbers are different, but the difference is so infinitesimally small as to be almost irrelevant. And yet these rankings suggest otherwise.

There were <500 DoT complaints in October 2013 out of 55,000,000 enplanements. Does it matter that one airline got 45 and another 55? Probably not.

You're right. I missed the heading of that first column. Guess I did all that math for nothing. :)

I tend to agree with WA on this one. It's like a horse finishing third place in a 3-way photo finish. That chart doesn't offer a thing in terms of deciding which airline would best serve the needs of a given individual flyer.
