Okay MP gang. I have a 15hr layover 1/30/12, landing 7:05am (if i'm lucky) departing 10:45pm. Any suggestions on what to do with my 10 or so hours would be greatly appreciated!

    You could:
Take a train from the airport to Koln (Cologne).
Take a train via Frankfurt Hbf to Heidelberg
    Take a train to Baden-Baden.

All are interesting destinations and are each about an hour away, as I recall.

Köln/Cologne would be my recommendation. Roughly an hour from FRA to Cologne city center by ICE train.

A few things I've found interesting while waiting at FRA:
    • Take the train to the old town of Frankfurt (a few stops after the main railway station, Hauptwache or Konstablerwache) which is just a short ride from the airport and enjoy some sightseeing and have a good local meal.
    • There are some nice museums in Frankfurt as well, check WikiTravel for a listing at <http://wikitravel.org/en/Frankfurt#See>. Brush up on hyperinflation at the money museum of the German central bank, perhaps ;-)

I get that for free almost every time I arrive or depart due to my aircraft being assigned to a remote stand :D:mad:

Jokes aside, I have seen a "Tour of FRA" office somewhere in the bowels of the airport among the shops on the way to the garage/car rental, and always meant to give that a try...

If you've never been to Frankfurt, head to old town Frankfurt and enjoy a walk by the river before heading to one of the many bars/restaurants in the Romerberg Area.

Another option is to head to Mainz which I found to be pretty interesting. Small town with lots to see, shops and restaurants.

Both are easily accessible via train from the airport. (The links are to my trip reports on my stopovers in Frankfurt and Mainz).
