‘Significant damage’ to Ryanair jet only discovered mid-flight
Airport security cameras captured the event:
FR crew maintained control, established safe operation, shot the checklists and executed a return to origin. This event showed effective management and a professional response. Anyone who doubts FR's overall professionalism needs to read the event analysis from this, and others. They run a safe op with full respect for regulations and maintain an appropriate safety culture.
Separately, the regs covering airframe inspection after such events are rightly called into question. These may be regarded as inadequate. This is a matter for air transportation regulatory authorities and relevant regulations are being revised to cover the need for more indepth inspections after extreme met events potentially affecting parked frames.
