[Sticky] Politics of Airlines: MASTER THREAD
Anyone remember the farcical Congressional hearing last May will recall the prediction that big money owned Congress would go MIA for voters and would slavishly service the needs of its owners, the hedge funds. Well, July 18, 2018 will live in infamy as the day the cartel announced to the world that the era of inter cartel competition or even the appearance of it was over.
Southwest now charging at least $140 for even its shortest flights-gone gone gone are the days of them being on the Ryanair model-which is thriving with young Europeans flying everywhere while most Americans can barely afford to go to an adjoining state. And of course there aren’t many of these $140 flights-Southwest is routinely the highest fare on its routes especially where they are an effective monopoly. To snag one of their lowerhighfares you have to go outbound on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saint Baldricks Day and return on a Sunday, Wednesday or a day when the relative humidity is 85% or higher (and showers are forecast)
In an era of media uselessness and government corruption you can publicly have the ask/tell with JP Morgan that appears on this transcript. He’s going to ask the question “in a way that (Kirby) can answer it” Price channeling is the new price fixing signal, apparently . Anyone else remember when a free press would pounce on this?
When airlines compete they get better.
As we know in the US, when they collude and conspire, they get worse.
Except in the US where mergers insure your survival no matter how much you suck, real competition can bankrupt a company that wages war on its customers like US carriers have.
Cost per km sky high without competition. You never see US corporate media doing any such reporting. They just print A4A lies and deceits. Is there any sentient being who believes either that US airfares are low much less going lower-the major disinformation push of A4A.
Pretty sad that even the Malaysian press and political system is less corrupted than our own, pointing out that artificial constriction of demand hurts hotels etc . Imagine what free market aviation would bring the US? If seats weren’t rationed and collusion was smashed? What is the true cost of cartel air?
Of course high fares hurt tourism. But US media refuse to cover this reality (find one insightful US story that examines what the cartel has wrought-you can’t.)
Just a friendly reminder for those living in or going to places where it snows, before you plunk down a huge deposit that because of collusion air travel is less than reliable in the winter. And because of seat scarcity, this means you may not just get out the next day, your entire trip may have to be shelved. With more and more hotels and cruise lines demanding 100% payment, make your risk calculations carefully. Some stats show cancellations are as high as 1/20 flights now that cartel operational convenience trumps getting people there. Honest media would do stories about this which is why there are none.
Most hostile airline is the Friendly Skies
Airline that decimated its legroom still lives off it
Airline whose rewards program was gutted and doesn’t even have a value chart makes billions-more than when its program was good-on selling worthless miles
Airline with the highest fares centers its ads on “low fares” (their current campaign
Anyone else remember consumer protection? Over and over again, cartel mocks Amerca
Now that everyone has caught on that A4A math is so bogus “adjusted for inflation” “excluding fees” “compared to 1924” airfare is a bargain (never saying it is dirt cheap in Europe-just saw winter fares for $8) time for A4A to tell everyone that airfare is slightly less expensive in adjusted terms than crossing the nation by pony in 1875 (averaging four average sized adults per stagecoach and 20 miles per day with only a bathroom break every 12 hours.)
Della is the least sorriest of the pathetic carteliers that constitute the embarrassment of greed centered air travel in the US. Egg on so many faces-as the cartel works relentlessly to make flying hellish, they pump out absurd claims-that the media disseminates about “improvements”. Air travel has gotten worse every day for 7 years. Have to go all the way down to 37 to find Delta an airline that is planning a future of half century old planes they are shopping for in a souk somewhere-as A4A says the cartel is reinvesting in planes - that would otherwise be in boneyards.
Literally hundreds of stories on the comprehensive destruction of US air travel and the looting of America go unwritten. Instead, the media covers masturhating pax, emergency landings, no more peanuts (luv) no more straws (aa) and what Taiwan will be called. We are truly a banana republic.
They shape and in some ways rule the world, but thanks to cartelization if you want to fly out of Silicon Valley’s SJC get ready for an absurd and time consuming and maybe stranding ( and of course expensive) connection through an out of the way overjammed hub. Once the largest carrier there post merger United has only three non stop routes out of there-may not be Friendly Skies but you will get to spend lots of quality time with United at three airports over 7 hours on even short flights.
Oscar saying no no no to being seen in the seat he and his cartel brought to America. United tells the blog, as usual, how they are working to make themselves better whilst in truth they’ve gotten worse each of the 2687 days sincere the corrupt mergers were allowed.
Hmm. Criminal charges for price fixing. Seems to be a slam dunk vs cartel that regularly and explicitly publically discusses its price fixing.
