They did it. Fifty states in seven days — less, actually, if counting by hours.

In doing so, a group of four guys with Joplin connections beat the existing record of 8 days, 20 minutes. They also gained a few thousand followers and their fair share of newspaper ink and television air time.

But more importantly, they said, they gained a story.

“For us, it’s really not about the end, but about the story — the memories that were made, not necessarily the records that were broken,” said Josh Willis, vice president of Canadian sales and marketing at American Ramp Company in Joplin.

He was joined by Brian Mehrens, a videographer at Missouri Southern State University, and former Joplin residents Nate Williams, of New York, and Chris Watson, of Dallas.

This type of thing depends on how you define being in a state !

Do you have to walk outside, drive, have a meal, spend a night etc.

A dubious accomplishment. A better experience would be to spend one night in each state, consecutively.

This sort of stuff reminds me of those "hot dog eating competitions" at least in case of the latter you might win a prize (or a years supply of Ex-lax or Tums:D)
