A United States air force plane was temporarily grounded today after being caught in a bird strike at Invercargill Airport.

Invercargill Airport general manager Chloe Scala said only one aeroplane, a United States air force LC130 plane stopped in Invercargill to refuel, was affected by the bird strike.

The strike, which happened about 11.30am, was ''very minimal'', she said.

The birds involved are believed to be oyster-catchers, but it is not known how many were in the area at the time.

I suspect that this (bird meets airplane) is a more common occurrence than we passengers could imagine. Hope that some of the Milepoint pilots weight in on this! 😉

IVC airport is near an estuary.

Unusual for USAF to visit IVC - must have been just too low on fuel to get back to CHC from Antarctica.
