I absolutely love the purchase Hyatt points promotions as they are great way to potentially save money at an upcoming Hyatt hotel stay. Fortunately, Hyatt just announced another opportunity with a 40% bonus on all points purchased through June 11, 2019. (We have yet to see higher than a 40% offer)

• 5,000-9,000 World of Hyatt points: 20% bonus
• 10,000-19,000 World of Hyatt points: 30% bonus
• 20,000-55,000 World of Hyatt points: 40% bonus

If you go all in, it will cost you $1,320 for 77,000 points. Typically, I do not think purchasing points is worth it, but with this bonus and at a few select hotels, it can absolutely save you a boat load of money. I definitely suggest doing the math and comparing the price of purchasing points vs. paying the best available rate at your desired property. Also keep in mind that when you redeem points, you do not pay the hotel resort fees, so take that into account when comparing the price. (Globalist members do not pay resort fees on paid or point reservations).

Let’s take a few scenarios on how purchasing these points can actually be in your benefit:

Example 1: Andaz Costa Rica

Although this property moved up to a category 5 property earlier this year, there is still a ton of value in purchasing points during peak dates. Many times throughout the year, this hotel can easily cost well over $500/night. With this promotion, you can purchase 60,200 points for $1,032. This can allow you redeem for three free nights at this property, bringing the nightly rate down to $344/night.

Keep in mind though that this property does not offer many standard rooms, so if you are looking to make a reservation on points, book early. They also sometimes play with award availability, which is never fun in the points and miles world.

Another example where you might find some savings is at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar as this property is also a category 5. Taxes and fees at this resort are unbelievably high so using points can be quite ideal.

Example 2: Hyatt Ziva Cancun

This Hyatt Ziva Cancun Hyatt’s all-inclusive properties and costs 25,000 points for 2 guests. More guests require more points! So let’s say you purchase a total of 50,400 points (including the bonus), that will cost you a total of $864. This can be redeemed for a two night stay, which will most likely save you a good chuck of change, especially over the peak winter months. I’ve stayed at this property twice and typically always see it costing over $600/night for two guests (although I always use points!). Purchasing points would save you close to $400 for the two nights!

This same math can also be used at the new upcoming Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana property in Punta Cana!

Category 1 Properties

Although most Hyatt category 1 properties might not classify as “aspirational”, using points can sometimes provide you an incredible savings. If you were to purchase 22,000 points, plus the 8,800 point bonus, that would give you 30,800 points. Since category 1 properties cost 5,000 points a night, this can be redeemed for a 6-night stay. Or even 6 individual one night stays. This will bring your nightly rate down to $88/night. While this might be expensive for some properties that fall into this category, there are many that easily cost well over $100 a night.

Overall… 

If you know of any upcoming plans, I would absolutely look into the option of purchasing points and see if it worth it. However, I would probably steer away from purchasing points without having a redemption destination in mind. The reason for this is, as we all know, categories can change at any times, thus requiring more points.
