IHG Rewards Club Updates

IHG announced changes to their Rewards Club terms and conditions restricting PointBreaks bookings to two PointBreaks award night reservations per hotel. Every quarter, IHG offers discounted stays at participating properties for just 5,000 points per night. Previously there were no limits on PointBreaks award night reservations.

Bottom line: The changes were most likely an effort to put an end to the common practice among some IHG Rewards Club members of blocking out entire months by making multiple reservations in order to gain more flexibility in their travel plans. Because most of these bookings were later cancelled, this practice was a loss for other members. In addition, IHG also added warnings in their terms and conditions that awards should not be sold or used for commercial gain and that this practice may lead to the freezing of your account and banning from the program.

Additionally, the new terms and conditions limit the number of Last Minute Reward Nights reservations that a member can have at any hotel to just one. IHG also clarifies that Points + Cash nights are considered award nights, and not paid nights, as is the case with Hyatt’s Points + Cash program where members can earn points on the cash portion of their stay.
