Bummer … he finally found a way to use his miles and the NCAA played bad cop. An Iowa State assistant men’s basketball coach was suspended for two games last season for using his frequent flyer miles to purchase a roundtrip ticket from Des Moines to Atlanta for a player receiving school aid at Iowa State, according to an Iowa State report submitted to the NCAA. The infraction was ruled a secondary violation by the NCAA because it was “an isolated or inadvertent violation that provided minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantages to Iowa State.” Under NCAA rules, student athletes can’t receive benefits that wouldn’t be available to other students. Had the coach used the Student Assistance Fund to pay for the flights, he would not have been in violation.
