United Airlines has modified its complimentary checked bag policy for Star Alliance Silver members. As of last month, Star Alliance Silver members are only allowed to check one bag at no charge on domestic routes and on flights between the U.S. and some international destinations, including Europe, Canada, Central or South America (excluding Brazil and Belize), the Caribbean, Mexico and India. Previously, Star Alliance Silver members could check two bags for free. The checked baggage policy for coach travelers on some routes has changed as well. Travelers in coach flying from the U.S. to Canada, Central or South America (excluding Brazil and Belize) only receive the first bag free and a second bag can be checked for $30. Elite members (including United Premier and Continental Silver members who have Star Alliance Silver status) and Star Alliance Gold members can continue to check two or three bags for free, depending on their elite status.
