Southwest Airlines is changing its liberal policy governing the use of drink coupons. Until now, expiration dates on drink coupons weren’t enforced and unused coupons frequently ended up for sale on third party sites, such as eBay. As of August 2010, Rapid Rewards drink coupons earned with an award have a new look and they include an expiration date that is one year from the date of issue. Rapid Rewards will communicate with members as the transition approaches and inform them about changes to the drink coupons. Customers flying on Business Select fares who receive a complimentary drink will only be able to use their drink coupons on the day of travel–redeeming them for drinks on future flights will not be an option. Southwest Airlines will continue to honor all old Rapid Rewards drink coupons (even those with printed expiration dates) for another year–until Aug. 31, 2011.
