SkyTeam Upgrades

SkyTeam Upgrades

SkyTeam recently launched an upgrade program that allows frequent flyer program members to use their miles to upgrade to business class when flying on any of the 10 SkyTeam member airlines. Only international reservations on published, full-fare coach tickets are eligible to be upgraded with miles and codeshare flights are not allowed–the flight must be marketed and operated by the same SkyTeam carrier.

After booking an eligible flight, you will need to call your frequent flyer program award reservation line at least three days prior to departure. If upgrade seats are available, your account will be debited and your ticket will be reissued with the confirmed upgrade. The number of miles required is based on the award chart of the frequent flyer program you are using to redeem miles for an upgrade. SkyTeam is planning on adding additional features to the upgrade program, including the ability to book upgrade awards online, include flights on Associate-operated flights and expand the criteria for upgrade-eligible flights. Because SkyTeam did not publish an upgrade award chart, this has caused some confusion for frequent flyers and the “full-fare” stipulation has made the offer less than exciting for many. But it’s good to have the option and when the upgrades are available to book online, the process should be better.
