The folks at Northwest WorldPerks are getting creative. The program’s latest promotion promotes teamwork and leadership as well as bonus miles. The Great Race works like this: register yourself and up to three teammates for the promotion that runs through May 31, 2008, and each time you and your teammates fly on Northwest, individually or together — WorldPerks will keep track of your miles. At the end of the promotion, you and your teammates will get bonus miles based on the miles traveled. Team flight miles of 2,500 will earn 1,500 bonus miles for each member; 5,000 flown will get 3,000 bonus miles; 15,000 will get 9,000; 20,000 will get 15,000 and 25,000 miles flown will earn every team member 20,000 bonus miles. The team captain will get an additional 500 bonus miles for each teammate’s first qualifying flight.

You must register for the promotion and be at least 18 years old and have a WorldPerks mailing address in the U.S. or Canada. If you are one of the top three teams in the U.S., you’ll also get prizes. The first place team members will each get a LG 47 inch LCD HDTV, second place team members a Wii Game Kit and third place team members will get an iPod Classic.

The fine print has the caveat where leadership skills will come in handy. Teammates must be WorldPerks members who have not earned WorldPerks miles for travel since Jan. 1, 2006. This requirement does not apply to team captains, so to make this promotion work, you’ll need to recruit new members or dust off a few members who haven’t flown for awhile. And you cannot get the miles on your flight miles only as a team Captain — at least one other team member must take qualifying flights for any bonus miles to be added to your account.
