United Airlines announced a new checked bag policy that will affect some passengers who do not have elite status in United Mileage Plus or Star Alliance. Beginning May 5, 2008, travelers flying on nonrefundable, domestic coach fares within the U.S. and to or from Canada, San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas will have to pay $25 to check a second bag. One bag can be checked for free. United Airlines is the only legacy carrier to implement a fee for checking a second bag and the airline estimates that the new policy will generate more than $100 million annually in cost savings and new revenue. Frequent United flyers who have Premier status or higher in Mileage Plus, or Silver status or higher with Star Alliance, can continue to check two bags for free.
