Continental Airlines has teamed with Sustainable Travel International to offer a voluntary program to allow travelers to calculate the carbon footprint of their booked itinerary and purchase carbon offsets when booking flights at continental.com. Proceeds from purchased offsets are invested by Sustainable Travel International into projects such as reforestation, renewable energy and energy conservation. These projects are located throughout the world and customers will have the option of selecting which kind of program they would like their carbon offsets to benefit. The carbon offset option will be available starting late summer 2007. According to a Continental press release, the airline has achieved an almost 35 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption per revenue passenger mile flown over the past 10 years. Continental has been in the forefront of green initiatives and this year was named one of FORTUNE magazine’s “Green Giants.”
