Miles and Taxes

The number of taxpayers charging their federal tax bills on a credit card jumped 36 percent last year. Was it the convenience, procrastination or the miles? Be aware that you will be charged a fee for the convenience of using plastic — normally 2.49 percent — so weigh that fee against the benefit you’ll earn with the miles. Link2Gov accepts American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa and for the first time, will accept debit cards to pay federal taxes for a flat fee of $2.95 no matter how much you owe. Other Web sites to pay with plastic include http://www.pay1040.com (for credit card payments) or http://www.incometaxpayment.com (for debit card payments). Another Web site, http://www.officialpayments.com accepts American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa. Remember, this year, you have until April 17 to file.

And if you would like to pick up a few extra Continental OnePass miles for preparing your taxes, you can earn 20 miles per dollar spent when you file your taxes with TurboTax online products purchased through continental.com.
