Paying Points to Avoid Flight Fees

Qantas Frequent Flyer members who would rather use miles than cash for award flight taxes and surcharges can now do so — but at a cost. A roundtrip coach ticket between Sydney and Melbourne would cost 29,000 points instead of the usual 16,000 points — this cost reflects a flat 6,500 point cost for each leg of the flight to cover the extra charges. Qantas admits that this might not be a popular option for some travelers, but offers the option for those who don’t mind spending the points instead of cash. Ultimately, it’s up to the flyer to determine if it’s worth it to spend almost twice the points to get the award.
