United Airlines has become the ninth Star Alliance member to offer the Star Alliance Upgrade Awards, allowing members of alliance programs to redeem miles or points for one-class only upgrades on scheduled flights operated by participating Star Alliance member carriers.

Star Alliance Upgrade Awards require a confirmation through the Web site or by calling reservations for bookings, before the upgrade can be redeemed through the existing frequent flyer program redemption channels. All upgrades are processed electronically and both paper tickets and electronic tickets can be upgraded under the plan.

Upgrades are permitted for one class of travel only; i.e., from economy business or from business to first. However, on United flights that offer first and economy class only, upgrades from economy to first class are possible.

Note: Hint. For additional award value, search for flights that only feature economy and first class seating.
