American Express Launches Two New Points-for-Discounts Travel Cards

American Express has introduced the “Blue Sky” credit card for consumers and the “Platinum Business FreedomPass” card for small business owners — two fee-free travel rewards cards that enable cardmembers to earn points that can be redeemed toward savings on flight, hotel, car rental or cruise charges.

Cardmembers earn reward points on virtually every dollar they spend and can redeem 7,500 points to get $100 off the cost of their travel purchase.

There are no caps on point redemption, and no annual fees.

Cardmembers use their card to make travel purchases through any source. After they receive their statement with the travel charge, they can contact American Express to receive a credit on their statement.

Delta SkyMiles members will note that Delta and Amex recently released a similar card, which offers percentage discounts on travel purchases, rather than a set dollar discount. In both cases, the cards can be used to avoid blackout dates and capacity controls, as the discount comes later, once an actual revenue ticket has been purchased.
