AAdvantage Allows Members to Reactivate Expired Miles

Through Dec. 31, AAdvantage members can reactivate some or all of their expired miles (for a fee). Miles that expired on or after Dec. 31, 2002 are eligible for reactivation, and there is no limit to the number of expired miles you can reactivate.

The price is $50 for every 5,000 miles, plus a $30 processing fee per transaction, per account. Reactivated miles will be credited to your account as a mileage bonus and do not count toward elite status qualification.

Note: The easiest and best way to check this is call the American AAdvantage service center and inquire. The encouragement we can give you on why you might want to check? AAdvantage now offers Short Hop awards that are only 15,000 miles to redeem. For amounts higher than 15,000 miles that may have expired, we still think the value is reasonable and what we might suggest is that you invest an additional $20 and enroll in the http://www.mileagemanager.com service which features reminders of your expiring miles. That’s a far cheaper price to pay.
